Arcanian Parish, my recent photo collage series, refers to a fictional parish in 19th century Louisiana. The term Arcanian, coined from the word arcane and stemming from the Latin word arcana, means secret and/or hidden. This word entered the English language as the Dark Ages gave way to the Renaissance and was often used in reference to the mysteries of nature and of the spiritual world. Created from 3 centuries of photography, these pieces depict the untold stories of men who, in 1800s Louisiana, would escape their worlds and gather at clandestine hideaways exploring friendship, love, nature, home, religion, death, and the afterlife.
