The Hourglass. In this piece the virility of youth and beauty is reminded of its inescapable mortality. Here the protagonist stands pensively, arms crossed and clutching a rosary, in front of a vine covered, 19th century New Orleans tomb. On his shoulder an agitated crow shrieks an ominous warning. Behind him a dead rabbit, spoils of the last hunt, hangs lifelessly from an antler mount. Sensing the trepidation of the moment his bird dog companion stands at his master’s side, staring nervously above, as he tries to decipher the distressing proclamations of the crow. Above all of this and unseen to the hunter, an hourglass, carved into the decaying tomb, stands as a reminder to the fleetingness of this scene and to the unstoppable passage of time.
