Images from the Turn of the Century American South
These images are all created using liquid emulsion on metal plates in a printing method
very similar to the 19th Century tintype process.
The metal plate printing process begins with applying a light sensitive emulsion to a treated metal plate.
Once the emulsion dries, an image is projected through a negative onto the plate.
(Note: Here the process differs from the original tintype, where a positive image
is projected ontothe plate.)
The exposed plate is then processed, toned sepia and sealed.
The resulting permanent image varies slightly in tones and imperfections from plate to plate.
All of the photographs on this website are printed in limited editions of 25.
The images are printed on 11 x 14" sheets of metal and mounted on 18 x 21" sheets of oxidized cold roll steel.
Each piece is hand-signed and numbered by the artist.
